Two Bottles of Kistler Durell Vineyards
Chardonnay 2001 and 2005

Bottle #1 Bottle #2
$225
$10 bid
steps
$125 These two Durells provide the opportunity to compare two different vintages of a California Chardonnay that The Wine Advocate's Robert Parker compares to top French Burgundy. Parker ranks the 2001 as a 94 and states, "The sensational 2001 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard's light gold color displays a greenish hue, and the bouquet is reticent, offering up notes of minerals and citrus oil. With excellent acidity, abundant minerality, and a long, concentrated finish, this tight but promising 2001 tastes like a grand cru Chablis mixed with a grand cru Cote d'Or white Burgundy. It should drink well for 5-7 years." Parker rates the 2005 at 94-96 points and notes: "More weight and power along with notes of roasted hazelnuts, peach, and smoky, almost clarified butter smells emerge from the 2005 Chardonnay. More extroverted and exuberant than the McCrea cuvee, it is an unusually elegant effort (because the acids are crisp and refreshing) that should drink beautifully for 7-8 years. Kistler Vineyards, undeniably one of the world's finest winemaking estates, is run with passionate dedication to detail and quality by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler. It is wines like these that keep an old critic like me inspired and energized." Donated by Nancy Baker

Oban 14-year-old
Scotch Whisky
$60
$5 bid
steps
$30 Toast the Holidays with this exquisite Scotch. A rich, full bodied Scotch, the nose has a rich sweetness with essence of fruit-oranges, lemons and pears-with sea salt and peaty smokiness. The palate is of mouth-filling autumn fruits and honey sweet spices, followed by a smoky, malty dryness. Oban Distillery has been the center of a bustling seaside for two centuries since it set up home in a fishing village. The West Highland malt is still produced in the same unhurried, traditional fashion. Donated by a friend of Stanford Women's Basketball

Jose Luis Ferrer 1995 Vino Veritas
Tinto de Crianza #35698
$100
$5 bid
steps
$45 Jose Luis Ferrer Bodegas would probably not have become what it is today if it were not for it lying in a social, cultural and farming setting such as the town of Binissalem, Spain. A beautiful village with aristocratic stone houses located in the very heart of Es Raiguer county, halfway between the plain and mountains, full of traditions and culture - a beautiful area at the foot of the protective and emblematic Tramuntana Sierra. Thanks to this, the magnificent Veritas Crianza, with its outstanding very complex aroma alongside a balanced taste, was obtained. This makes for a wine to be enjoyed immediately or to be saved for many years. This 1995 vintage runs from citrus leaf and saffron flower to honey and red fruits of the forest alongside mature fruit and third aromas with outstanding dairy, vanilla and chocolate. Balanced, blended, bodied, sweet tannins, syrupy, warm and lingering, this numbered bottle is a brilliant cherry red with abundant must. Donated by a friend of Stanford Women's Basketball

Angelo Mio Menlo Park
$30 Gift certificate
$30
$5 bid
steps
$20 One of the most attractive restaurants in Menlo Park, Angelo Mio looks like a postcard from Milan with its vaulted ceilings, white linen-topped tables, rich wood paneling and eye-candy artwork decking the walls. The food is every bit as pleasing as the setting. The starter menu is filled with such artfully prepared treats as soft polenta with sauteed vegetables, fresh New Zealand mussels and manila clams, and grilled mushrooms topped with fresh goat cheese. The penne con pollo, which mixes succulent slices of grilled chicken with still-crisp bell peppers, black olives and roasted garlic in a zesty tomato sauce, is terrific, but the simple vegetable fettuccine is nearly as good. The restaurant is rightly well known for its veal dishes; however, the seafood options deliver the best taste treasures. Try the plump jumbo prawns, tenderly sauteed in a white wine sauce, or the great calamari steak piccata and you won't be disappointed. Finish your meal with the lush tiramisu and a cup of properly prepared espresso. Donated by Angelo Mio. No expiration date

2005 d'Arenberg "The Dead Arm Shiraz
McLaren Vale South Australia
$55
$5 bid
steps
$30 The Dead Arm gets its name in a fairly inauspicious way - it is named after the disease which afflicts some of the oldest vines at d'Arenberg. The disease, Eutypa Lata, or 'Dead Arm' is common all around the world in old vineyard sites. The disease in effect slowly reduces one of the 'arms' of the vines to dead wood, which then means the other arm of the vine produces small volumes of the most incredibly concentrated and highly flavored grapes. This makes ideal material to go into this top Shiraz. From Wineorama-"I really like this vintage of Dead Arm and think it shows both an evolution in style and refinement and a greater degree of sophistication than those that came before. A riot of smells here with cherry, red berry, flower stems, leather, pepper, licorice and toasty oak. A bit reductive but in the nicest possible way. On the palate, full bodied, although not heavy, with cherry and red fruits, pepper, licorice and more meaty black olive tapanade flavors, backed with tastefully applied toasty oak. It tastes fresh and lively with strong grippy tannins and has great drive through the palate. Significant length. A brilliant wine." Donated by a friend of Stanford Women's Basketball

2000 Roederer Estate Anderson Valley
L'Ermitage Brut
$50
$5 bid
steps
$25 Pick up this bit of bubbly for your holiday feast! L'Ermitage is Roederer Estate's special Tete de Cuvee, which has consistently been rated one of California's top sparkling wines since its debut in 1989. As in Champagne, L'Ermitage is made only in exceptional years, of pre-selected grapes that come from only the very best lots. Fine tiny bubbles and a long lasting mousse are the usual footprints of the L'Ermitage cuvee. This cuvee of the Millenium is fruity (apple, peach) with a delicate bread crust note. Mouth feel is on well balanced wine with baked apple flavors and a long and round creamy finish. Donated by a friend of Stanford Women's Basketball

1985 Groth Napa
Cabernet Sauvignon
$125
$5 bid
steps
$70 Having a Prime Rib for your Holiday dinner? This would be the perfect complement! Groth turned in a superb performance with its 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon. It offers beautiful, sweet, ripe, flashy, black-cherry and cassis fruit, toasty oak, and a subtle, herbaceous note. Rich, opulent, and fully mature, this is a velvety-textured, explosively fruity wine. Lovely perfumed, floral and cherry-berry aromas belie its age. Supple and graceful, this is a delicate wine that has shed most of its tannins yet retained a tasty core of fruit. Donated by Harriet Benson
221
Kistler Vineyards
2005 Pinot Noir
$125
$5 bid
steps
$70 93-95 points rating by Robert Parker of Wine Advocate: "Steve Kistler has backed off extraction for his Pinot Noirs, resulting in more ethereal (but not light) Pinots that are less burdened down by tannin in their youth, with each vineyard's distinctive fruit and terroir coming through with much greater intensity. After experimenting with some Dijon clones, Kistler became convinced that the best clone for cool climate vineyards is the Calera Clone from California, and based on what he has achieved, I can't argue. The deep ruby/purple-hued 2005 Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard possesses sweet blueberry, raspberry, and forest floor notes, zesty acidity, elegance, and finesse, and a medium-bodied finish."
